Agnes Fagnant

January 19, 1931 — December 12, 2016

Agnes M. Fagnant of Katy, TX and former long-time resident of Rawlins, passed away at the Grace Care Center Nursing Home on Monday, December 12, 2016, after a long struggle with dementia. She was 85 years old. Rosary services will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 20, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. The Funeral Mass will begin at approximately 10:00 a.m. following the Rosary Service. Final Commendation and Committal will take place at the Rawlins Cemetery immediately after the Mass. Pallbearers will be Matthew Fagnant, Shaun Fagnant, Karl Fagnant, Kurt Kelly, Gary Woodward and Bronson Fairhurst. Honorary pallbearers will be Chis Fagnant, Tony Fagnant, Matthew Streams, Nick Novak and Al Deist. Father Sam Hayes will be the celebrant for the Funeral Mass. Agnes was born in Dickinson, ND, on January 19, 1931, the daughter of Carl and Marie Liedl. She was raised in Killdeer, ND and was a 1948 graduate of Killdeer High School. After high school, she attended the University of North Dakota from which she graduated in June 1952 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education - Home Economics and a Bachelor's Diploma in Teaching. She began her career in education in the fall of 1952 in Montana before moving to Rawlins in 1954. She taught Home Economics at Rawlins High School from August 1954 until May of 1959. It was during those years that she met her husband of 57 years, Ernest "Ernie" Fagnant, whom she married on August 14, 1958. Agnes took a break from teaching for ten years to start a family and raise young sons Michael and David. She returned to her education career in August 1969 teaching Home Economics at Rawlins Junior High School for eighteen years. Agnes retired from teaching in June 1987 after a total of 23 years educating hundreds of students in Carbon County School District No.1. During her working years, Agnes was active in the American Association of University Women (AAUW), was a member of the St. Joseph Altar Society and Circles and was a Cub Scout Den Leader for several years. During her retirement years she served as a volunteer at Carbon County Memorial Hospital, volunteered at the St. Vincent DePaul Society and continued to be active in the AAUW and St. Joseph Church Altar Society. She and Ernie also were members of the Rawlins Heritage Society enjoying many trips across the U.S. during their retirement years. For most of her life she was able to enjoy camping with her family in the Snowy Range area of Medicine Bow National Forest. Agnes and Ernest moved to Sugar Land, TX during the fall of 2009 to be closer to son Michael and his family. She moved to the Grace Care Center in Katy, TX during the summer of 2012 following a serious fall and the worsening of dementia symptoms. Agnes is survived by her sons, Michael Fagnant and his wife Cindy of Katy, TX and David Fagnant of Owasso, OK, five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, two nephews and one niece. She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Marie, husband Ernie and her daughter-in-law, Pam Fagnant. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in the memory of Agnes M.
