Obituary

After fighting a long battle with cancer, 69-year-old Jack Roberts passed away on November 14th at his home near Riverside, Wyoming, surrounded by family.

Jack was born on September 9, 1956, in Rawlins, Wyoming to Geraldine (Herring) Roberts/Beck and James Roberts.

Jack lived in Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado, and Illinois, but the place that he called home and “hung his hat” was Wyoming.

He liked to live a simple life not wanting more than he needed, not needing more than he had.

He graduated from Encampment High School in 1975, and went on to join the Navy, but was rejected because of health issues.

He made his home in Encampment the town that he loved, surrounded by the mountains, family and friends that fulfilled his life.

In 1989, he married Annie McColloch and became a stepfather to her son Travis.

Throughout his life he worked in many places, but none more than he did the timber, operating equipment, and a chain saw. He fertilized for a few seasons to occupy his time until the mountains opened up and he could return to logging. He then became his own boss, on private property supplying locals with saw logs, firewood, and any other timber product he had available to him that they needed.

He was a man of the woods known for bartering and firewood.

Loving to work with wood, he would make products by hand, such as pictures, frames, small cabins, bookshelves, and clocks, just to mention a few.

Jack believed in living a simple life, and saying what he meant, both of which he did every day of his life. Anyone who talked with him witnessed this firsthand. If you asked him how he was going, he would always reply “plumb damn useless.”

He is survived by his wife Annie, step son Travis and (Page), his mom Geraldine (Peaches) Beck, sister Cyndi Sifford, niece Rhonda Sifford (Jacob) Corbin, Alexia and Bowen, nephew Justin Sifford (Taylor) Bristin, Baylin, Brighton, and Payzlee, niece Shawneka Sifford (Josh), half-brothers Danny and Kenny Roberts from Oklahoma (and their families), half-sister Wendy (Roberts) Sprague and her family, and his half-sister Becky (Roberts) Hoel’s family, along with many other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his stepdad Al Beck, his dad James Roberts, his half-sister Becky (Roberts) Hoel, and both maternal and paternal grandparents, again with many other family members and friends that meant so much to him.

I hope he will be remembered as “his own person” who lived his life the way he thought was right, and the way he wanted.

If he were here now, he would be telling me as I am writing tis obituary and trying to find the right words, “just tell them I’m dead.” Plain and simple. That was Jack!!

Thank you to the medical community that helped us with Jack, and to the many friends, family and emergency personnel who were always there for us.

Services will be at a later time, (next spring or summer) so that we can celebrate his life in the mountains, which meant so much to him.
