Leo Lovato

October 2, 1932 — September 15, 2015

Leo P. Lovato, 82, of Rawlins passed away Sept. 15, 2015 at the Cheyenne VA Medical Center. He was born Oct. 2, 1932 in Holman, NM to parents Emma (Cordova) and Procopio Lovato. A Vigil Service with recitation of the Rosary will be held on Mon. Sept. 21, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tues. Sept. 22, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Father Sam Hayes will be the Celebrant. Interment with military honors will follow in the Rawlins Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Liam Lovato, Royce Lovato, Ross Lovato, Ryan Lovato, Reyse Lovato and Hillary Rodriguez. Honorary Pallbearers will be Crystal Rodriguez and Justin Rodriguez. Leo attended school in Mora County, NM and in Rawlins, when he moved with his family in 1945. He then served in the U.S. Air Force in Korea for four years, being honorably discharged as a SSgt in 1954. He was married to Annabelle Martinez in 1956 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Rawlins. He worked for many years as a truck driver and had always said that he fell in love with an 18-Wheeler. His hobbies included watching the Colorado Rockies and Denver Broncos, playing cribbage and gin, fishing, hunting (poaching, haha!) and spending time with his family. He is fondly remembered as an honest and fair man and a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He had a smile for everyone he met and always told it the way it was. Survivors include his children, Anthony (Esther) Lovato and Cathy (Randy) Rodriguez of Rawlins and Tommy Lovato of Cheyenne; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Gil Lovato of Nevada, Celia Herrera of Texas, Stella Alfaro of California and Toni Bookout of Louisiana. He was preceded in death by his wife, Annabelle Lovato; son, Johnny Lovato; grandson, Trent Lovato; parents, Emma (Cordova) and Procopio Lovato; and siblings, Ida Martinez, Art Lovato and Betty Romero.
