Paul Wick

November 28, 1919 — July 20, 2014

Longtime Elk Mountain resident Paul R. Wick passed away on July 20, 2014 at the age of 94. Paul was born in Elk Mountain, Wyoming on November 28, 1919, the youngest of eight children born to John and Hulda (Schoen) Wick. He and his siblings were raised and worked on the Wick family Wagonhound Ranch east of Elk Mountain. A veteran of World War II, he served his country in the Pacific Theater with the 21st Infantry Regiment. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Technical Sergeant in October of 1945. Following his military service he returned Elk Mountain where he met and married Evelyn Louise Hyatt. They made their home in Elk Mountain and raised their son, Dennis and daughter, Paula Kathleen. Paul tended bar during the 1950's heyday of the Elk Mountain Garden Spot Pavilion and served drinks to music greats like Hank Williams and Lawrence Welk. He later owned and operated a truck hauling coal from the mine north of Elk Mountain into Hanna. When the coal haul dried up he worked as a logger in the nearby Medicine Bow National Forest. In 1968 he went to work for Rosebud coal mine in Hanna, retiring in 1986. After retirement he and Evelyn enjoyed traveling and he enjoyed telling of their visits to all 50 states. Paul was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Francis, William, Herbert and Elmer; three sisters, Virginia, Alice and Edna; his wife, Evelyn in 1994; his daughter, Paula Kathleen Henslee in 2009; and an infant grandson. He is survived by his son, Dennis Wick and wife, Catherine of Elk Mountain; grandson, Paul Louis Wick and wife, Tamie of Laramie; grandson, Justin Wick and wife, Monique of Juneau, Alaska; great-grandchildren, Hunter and Harley Wick of Laramie; son-in law, JR Henslee of Saratoga; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Services will be held at the Elk Mountain Community Church on Monday, July 28, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. with Eli Hobbs officiating. Visitation with viewing will be held one hour prior to services at the church. Interment with military honors will follow in the Elk Mountain Cemetery. A luncheon for family and friends will be held at the Elk Mountain Centennial Park after the service. Pallbearers are Paul L. Wick, Justin Wick, Hunter Wick, Francis Menke, Craig Jones, Pat Eastman, Steve Bonner and Rollie Bowen. Honorary pallbearers are Lonnie Briggs, JR Henslee and Bill Hudgins.
