Robert E. “Bob” Bentsen, fondly known as "Bubba," passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 1, 2026, in Rawlins, Wyoming. He was born on May 13, 1938, in Rock Springs, Wyoming, and leaves behind a legacy filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories that will carry on within the hearts of his family and friends.
A proud father and dedicated family man, Bob enjoyed time with his family, especially during long games of dice, Yahtzee, and cards that often turned into hours of laughter. He loved tossing a ball with his sons, Dennis and Rick, a memory still marked by a broken window, likely the result of one last game of catch with Dad. Bob also loved joking and teasing his daughter, Bobbi, once telling her a silly story about making a moose call out of a soda can. With family and friends, he continued that playful spirit, always ready with a joke or a smile.
When Bob’s kids were young, family fishing trips created some of their best memories. One trip to Savery Creek stands out, remembered especially by his son Dennis. After being stopped by two shepherds who would not let them pass, Bob offered a few beers, and soon they were riding horses and allowed to fish. That night, around the campfire, Bob came up the creek making bear sounds, scaring all of them.
He had a deep passion for sports, especially the Yankees and the Broncos, and it was a big part of family life. Shared moments cheering for their favorite teams helped build strong bonds. He loved Monday Night Football, finding joy not just in the games but in gathering around the television, creating traditions filled with noise and excitement. Bob’s playful spirit and kindness drew everyone in.
After graduating from Rawlins High School in 1956 and completing one year at BYU, he devoted 46 years of his life to the Union Pacific Railroad—one of his proudest accomplishments. His hardworking nature reflected in his dedication to providing for his loved ones, enabling him to raise a beautiful family, an achievement he cherished deeply.
Aside from work, Bob was an avid golfer, known for sharing countless enjoyable moments on the greens and the 19th hole. He used to love dancing at the Elks, where laughter was always part of the fun. He had a unique way of showing love through humor, often giving friends and family whimsical nicknames that reflected his playful spirit.
He is survived by his wife, Merri Bentsen, son Dennis (Patty) Bentsen, daughter Bobbi Reed, stepdaughter Kim (Ted) Croy, sister Jane Clegg, and 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren, a lively bunch who will carry forward his humor and spirit.
Bob was preceded in death by his loving parents, his first wife Judy Bentsen, brother Jimmy Bentsen, son Rick Bentsen, stepson Kent Holloway, and grandson Adam Reed. The memories of their times together remain a treasure that will continue to bring warmth and smiles for generations to come.
A memorial service to honor Bob’s life will take place on February 21, 2026 at 1 pm, at the Rawlins Elks Lodge #609. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Bob’s memory to the Rawlins Elks Lodge #609.
