Robert James Bustos Sr., 66, of Rawlins, Wyoming, passed away on July 5, 2025, in a UTV accident in the Sierra Madre Mountains. He was surrounded by his loving family doing what he loved most: being outdoors and with those he cherished.
Born on March 22, 1959, in Rawlins, Robert was a proud Wyoming native known for his unmatched work ethic, deep love for the outdoors, and unshakable devotion to his family.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Katie Bustos; his sister, Virginia; his mother-in-law, Alice Sisneros; and his beloved wife, Betty Jean.
Robert met Betty Jean in 1976 and then married the love of his life in 1977, together they shared 44 years of marriage filled with love, laughter, and adventure. They enjoyed cruising on their Harley and lowrider, jamming out to loud music, and going to concerts. Some of their favorite moments were sleepovers with grandkids watching movies and making blueberry pancakes in the morning, traveling with family, and visiting Casa Bonita. The grandkids all knew him as Coo-Coo, a nickname he wore with pride. To them, Coo-Coo was unforgettable; his presence, laughter, and love left lasting impressions that will be cherished forever.
He is survived by his sons Robert Jr., and his children Allana (Cody) and Malachi (Kiki); Joe and his wife Nicci, and their children Darian (Kevin) and great-grandson Carter, Karlee, and Lily; and Brandon. He also leaves behind his faithful companion and best buddy, Otis.
Robert is also survived by his brothers Richard (Delores), David (Rita), and father-in law Gilbert Sisneros, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Robert spent over 30 years in the tanning industry, earning national recognition for his craftsmanship-working on projects involving exotic animals from across the country. In addition, he dedicated more than 25 years to Union Pacific Railroad on the Fuel Rack as an MSO, with plans to retire in January 2026.
An avid outdoorsman, Robert lived for the peace and thrill of nature. He was most at home hunting big game, casting a line in a mountain lake, ice fishing in winter, camping with loved ones, off-roading, snowmobiling and his most recent love; building his mountain cabin where he was looking forward to filling it with memories! His hands were never idle-he could fix, build, or restore just about anything: from his lowrider to a sheep wagon, even a tricycle salvaged from the landfill. If it had wheels-or promise Robert could make it shine again.
A Golden Gloves boxer in his youth, Robert carried that same grit and determination throughout his life. Above all, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He never missed an opportunity to express how proud he was of his family and all they had accomplished. His pride in them was as endless as his love.
Robert's legacy is one of hard work, deep loyalty, and generous spirit. He will be profoundly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Services will be held Saturday, July 12th at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rawlins. A graveside service and lunch at the Jeffrey Center will follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Robert by spending time outdoors with the ones you love-just as he would have wanted.
