Robert Lee (Bob) McCargar, age 84, of Saratoga, Wyoming passed away on January 10, 2015 at Deseret Health and Rehabilitation in Saratoga. He was born October 6, 1930 in Baggs, Wyoming to Alfred and Edith (Wise) McCargar. He spent his childhood on Muddy Creek near Baggs and in the North Platte Valley near Saratoga. As a child he either wanted to be a cowboy or a soldier. He was lucky over the course of his life and worked as both. As a young man, he worked on many ranches in the North Platte Valley. In 1948, he enlisted in the U.S. Army retiring in 1971 with the rank of Sargent Major; having been awarded a Purple Heart, Silver Star with clusters, a Bronze Star with cluster and many more awards and commendations. In 1955 Bob married Vera Wood and together with their daughters, Gwen and Kathleen, traveled and lived in many places around the U.S and the world. Upon retirement from the U.S. Army in 1971 he and his family returned home to Saratoga. While living in Saratoga he worked for various law enforcement agencies and became a successful entrepreneur. He was an avid outdoors man who lived to share his experiences with his children, grand children and many nieces and nephews. He was a long time member of American Legion Angus England Post 54 and held all of the offices including Commander. He was involved in local politics and was a Saratoga Town Council member for several years. He was predeceased by his mother and father, eight half-siblings and a sister, Jane Ream. He is survived by his wife Vera of Saratoga, daughters Gwen McCargar and husband Joseph DiGregorio of Denver, Colorado and Kathleen Fraser and husband Tracy Fraser of Casper, Wyoming, grandchildren Rob McCargar and wife Randi, Kelli Fraser and Lisa Fraser, great-grandchildren Kaycee McCargar and Issac Easley, sisters Margaret Ream, Rose Slinde, Jean Stevens and husband Bob Stevens, Norma Bromley and husband Stormy Storm, brothers Fred McCargar and wife Joanne, and Francis McCargar and wife Elsie, and numerous nieces and nephews and their children. A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at the Saratoga Cemetery Pavilion on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 11:30 am with a luncheon to follow at the American Legion Home. Bob McCargar was a man with a wicked sense of humor, an unstoppable sense of honor, and was a true patriot who never stopped serving his country.
